Hi, I'm CYAN, lead artist and educator at CYAN PMU in Hongdae, Seoul.
I worked as a nationally certified clinical psychologist before moving into permanent makeup, and I was the first Korean instructor to teach powder brows at Japanese clinics in Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka.In that time I've been asked about PMU training cost more than almost anything else. I can't set a number for you, but I can tell you exactly what builds that number.Once you know it, a single quote sheet tells you what's missing.
What actually determines PMU training cost?
Course fees are set by number of subjects ร amount of hands-on practice ร length of after-support, not by how many days you sit in a room.Two "one-month courses" can differ completely on all three.
โ Number of subjects โ Brows only, or brows plus lips, hairline and cover-up.Every added subject means separate pigment theory and a separate technique, which doubles the hours.
โ Hands-on practice โ Practice skin only, or live models, and how many.Model practice means working on real skin under your instructor's supervision, and each model costs materials and time. This is the single biggest driver of price.
โ After-support โ How long you can still ask questions after you finish.The moment you freeze in front of your first client will come.Whether you have someone to ask is what separates artists a year later.
A cheap course isn't the problem. Choosing without knowing what was left out is.
On top of that, machines, needles and pigment may or may not be included, and an online course may or may not come with it.Comparing totals side by side will mislead you every time.
The same number of class days does not mean the same amount learned.

Choose by where you're starting from, not by where you want to end up.
โ One-day, two-day, three-day (short courses) โ One technique, compressed.Right if you already work and want to sharpen a specific skill.If you're brand new and stop here, your hand won't be steady enough for real clients.
โ Masterclass โ Rebuilding from the ground up.At CYAN this runs across two months with four sessions and five demos, plus a full year of feedback, review videos and one on-site class.You learn hand and machine together.
โ Full startup course โ Brows, lips and hairline in full, with 10 to 12 supervised models, over three months, all the way to opening a studio.Built so someone who has never attended any academy can work on real clients afterwards.

Is a powder brows course enough, or do I need lips and hairline too?
For income, brows alone won't carry you โ but brows still come first. Demand is highest there, and brows contain the whole logic of design, pigment and depth, which makes them the right entry subject. Once your hand settles, the other areas come far faster.
โ Brows โ Split into hand powder and machine powder.Different tools mean the hand has to be trained twice.
โ Lips โ Thin skin, dense blood supply, and colour settles differently than on brows.That's why lip blush training is a separate subject.
โ Powder hairline โ Softens the hairline edge, and it's what opens the door to male clients.
โ Cover-up of old work โ Correcting faded or discoloured brows from elsewhere.It's the most common thing you'll meet in practice, and it's missing from a surprising number of curriculums.
One thing to be clear about: eyeliner and scalp micropigmentation (SMP) are not taught at CYAN. We perform them as treatments only.If those areas are your goal, go to a school that actually teaches them.
Add subjects in the wrong order and none of them reinforce each other.
Can you learn permanent makeup on your own?
You can build the theory and the eye on your own, but you cannot teach yourself depth. Most colour loss traces back to needle depth, and depth lives in your fingertips โ video doesn't carry it. Worse, without seeing healed results you will never learn what you got wrong.
So the order we recommend is free guide โ online course (VOD) โ short course โ single subject โ full startup course โ one year of feedback.The first two steps you can do alone.Check whether the teaching style and video quality suit you through the online course, then move offline at the point where your hands need to be in the room.
There is one thing video can't carry across, and it's the thing that decides the result.
What to actually check when choosing a school in Seoul
Location matters far less than whether the instructor can show you healed work.Permanent makeup schools in Seoul cluster around Hongdae and Gangnam, but that's a few subway stops โ the outcome is decided by the teacher. When you get a quote, ask these four things.
โ How many live models do I work on?(Observing is not practising.)
โ Are materials and machine included in the fee, or separate?
โ How long can I ask questions after I finish?
โ May I see photos taken one month after the procedure?
Location is a few stops apart; the instructor is the whole difference.

How does CYAN ACADEMY set its fees?
We don't post a number. Fees are quoted in consultation based on the course and the schedule, because the subject mix, the number of models and whether the class travels genuinely change the figure โ and one posted number would only mislead. The online course (VOD) runs separately from the offline programme.
What we do publish is what's included: theory, advanced theory, number of demos, number of live models, review videos, on-site classes and the feedback window, all comparable course by course. A posted number is convenient, and then it becomes the misunderstanding.
What should you read first on a quote?
Open the inclusions table before you look at the total.
An inclusions table lists theory, demos, practice, materials and support line by line. What splits two quotes is usually material cost โ the consumables used in class such as machine, needles and pigment โ and whether it sits inside the tuition or outside it.And the support period is the window in which your questions still get answered after the course; it never shows in the total, yet it moves the real value the most.

Can I start working after a one-day course?
If you already practise and want to sharpen one specific technique, a one- or two-day course is enough. But if you are completely new and stop there, your hand will not be steady enough for paying clients. Most colour loss traces back to needle depth, and depth is a fingertip sense that only settles through repeated practice on synthetic skin and live models โ a short schedule cannot supply that. Beginners are better served by a masterclass that rebuilds from the basics, or a full startup course covering every subject.
Can I take the lip blush training on its own?
Yes. Subjects can be combined freely. The CYAN ACADEMY subjects are hand powder, machine powder, powder hairline, cover-up of old work, design, pigment and colour theory, and lips, so you can take only the subject you need as a short course. In practice the most common case is an artist already doing brows who adds lips alone. Lips do need separate study of pigment selection and tone correction, because thin skin and dense blood supply make colour settle differently than on brows.
Do you teach eyeliner or scalp micropigmentation (SMP)?
No. Eyeliner and scalp micropigmentation are performed at CYAN as treatments only and are not offered as course subjects. The subjects currently taught are hand powder, machine powder, powder hairline, cover-up of old work, design, pigment and colour theory, and lips. If eyeliner or SMP is what you want to learn, going to a school that actually teaches those areas will save you time.
Can I learn permanent makeup by myself?
