Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) in Hongdae, CYAN

When people look for scalp micropigmentation (SMP) in Hongdae, what usually comes to mind is "how much hair." CYAN looks first at the impression created by a scalp that reads as sparse, rather than at the amount of hair. SMP is a form of semi-permanent makeup that places follicle-like dots where hair has thinned so the scalp looks denser; in the Hongdae area of Mapo-gu, Seoul, CYAN designs the hairline, crown and part line within the impression of your whole face and head.

SMP is not a treatment that cures hair loss or makes hair grow; it is the work of placing dots on the scalp to visually fill in density. It can be applied to look like the follicles of a closely cropped cut, or to reduce the empty look of scalp showing through longer hair, and it is sometimes used to visually soften scars or surgical marks.

Even with the same SMP, the impression changes greatly with the size, shade and angle of the dots and where the hairline starts. Too sharp a line can actually look unnatural, so setting a natural density matched to your original hair flow and face shape matters. What stays on the head are dots — but what stays with people is the impression, so we confirm the design and get your agreement before starting.

Needles and consumables are single-use, and the treatment space is kept sanitized. The scalp is often built up in several sessions to raise density gradually, and dots that look dark right after a session settle in tone over time. How long it lasts varies with your scalp condition, sun exposure and aftercare, and if it fades we refine it with a touch-up (retouch).

How the dots are built

Fine dots are placed in the shallow layers of the scalp to create the density of short hair coming through. It does not grow hair — it reduces the contrast that lets scalp show, so the area reads fuller.

What makes it look natural is calculated irregularity rather than a regular pattern.Dot size and depth of tone are varied and matched to the colour and thickness of your remaining hair, and the edge is softened rather than drawn as a hard line.

Why it is split across sessions

Taking the density all the way in one pass tends to read heavy once healed.Sessions are usually spaced one to two weeks apart, building density gradually, with the strength of the next pass decided from how the last one settled.

So SMP is better planned as a few weeks in your calendar than as a single day.If there is active inflammation on the scalp, the dates are moved until it settles.

Where the result shows best

Adding density where hair is still present gives the most natural result. When the crown looks thin or the parting has widened, simply closing the contrast between scalp and hair already makes the area read as much fuller.

If you keep your hair short, there is more scope. On short hair each dot reads as a follicle, so rebuilding a front hairline or lifting overall density looks convincing. If you wear your hair long, the focus shifts to filling density rather than defining a line.

Scalp micropigmentation does not make hair grow.It fills in the contrast where the scalp shows through, so the area looks denser. How far that can go depends on the hair you have now, which is why we decide it in person at the consultation.

Matching it to the hair you already have

Getting the colour and the size right is the whole job.Darker than your hair and the dots sit apart from it; too light and nothing looks filled. So we read your scalp tone and hair colour together, and in practice start about a shade lighter than the target.

If you have grey coming through, we keep the contrast low.Packing in dark dots only makes the grey stand out more, so dropping the overall tone and building density is the more natural route.

Dot size and spacing follow the thickness of your hair.Coarse dots on fine hair look wrong close up.The first session starts light, and we adjust in the next one once we can see how it actually sits.

Session intervals and how often you come in

The scalp covers a large area and is never filled in dark in one pass, so the work is normally split across several sessions. The colour needs time to settle between them, so the next appointment usually sits a few weeks out.

For the first few days the colour looks at its strongest and the scalp may be slightly red.Skip heavy sweating, saunas and swimming for those first days, and start washing your hair from the point we tell you.

If you are travelling from another region or from abroad, keeping to the intervals can be difficult. We check what dates are realistic at the first consultation, and if the number of visits has to come down, we adjust how much ground each session covers.

Frequently asked questions

Is scalp micropigmentation a hair-loss treatment?

No. SMP is not a procedure that grows hair or treats hair loss; it is a form of semi-permanent makeup that places follicle-like dots on the scalp so it visually looks denser. It tends to suit people who want to soften the sparse look that comes with thinner hair.

Do I have to shave my head?

You do not have to shave it. For a short style we make it look like follicles; for longer hair we work to reduce the empty look of scalp showing through. We look at the hair length and style you want together in consultation and decide from there.

Can it cover scars too?

It is sometimes used to visually soften hair-transplant marks or scarred areas. That said, results vary with the condition of the scar and your skin, so whether it is possible and how much to expect are confirmed in the pre-treatment consultation.

How much does scalp micropigmentation cost?

The cost of SMP depends on the area covered — hairline, crown, part line or the whole scalp — and how many sessions are needed. Exact pricing is given in consultation after looking at your scalp, and you can check overall service rates on our pricing page.

I sweat a lot and train often. Is that a problem?

Once the colour has settled you can train as usual. In the first few days after a session, though, sweat can affect how the pigment settles, so hold off on hard training, saunas and swimming for the period we give you. If you tell us in advance that you sweat heavily, we factor that into the number of sessions and the depth we work at.

Does the colour change over time?

It is semi-permanent, so it fades gradually. The scalp takes direct sun, so heavy UV exposure tends to fade it faster, and when it lightens we top it up. Building it in low contrast against your own scalp tone from the start is exactly what keeps it from going off-colour as it fades.
