Hairline Tattoo in Hongdae โ How Far the Forehead Can Come Down
"My forehead is wide so I'm looking at hairline work โ mostly I want to know how far down it can come."
"Would filling the M-shape look natural? I keep hesitating in case it shows."
"I'd like to stop wearing a fringe, but I don't know if that's realistic."
Hi, I'm CYAN, lead artist at CYAN PMU in Hongdae, Seoul.
A hairline is a procedure where how far still looks natural has to be settled before how far down you go.Cross the limit and you lose in naturalness exactly what you gained in surface โ and that's the first thing anyone sees from the front. Here's how that limit gets set.
How far can the forehead come down?
Plainly put, a number is the wrong answer; the mirror is the right one.
Hairline tattooing builds fine dots that read like follicles in the shallow layers of the scalp, so the hairline appears to sit further forward. What sets the limit isn't how wide the forehead is but the distance to the brows, and where your own baby hair used to grow.
โ The distance to the brows sets the facial proportion
โ Where your baby hair used to sit tells you the natural upper limit
The limit is set by where hair used to grow, not by forehead size.
Why does crossing the limit show?
The key: because a line appears where hair could never grow.
A real hairline isn't a ruled line; it's an edge that dissolves as baby hair scatters.Ignore that softness and bring it straight down and the edge becomes crisp, which reads instantly from the front.
A natural hairline comes from an edge that diffuses, not one that's drawn.
A soft line is a finish where the front row's dots are spaced wider and lightened so the edge blurs. Naturalness in a hairline really comes down to this finish, so look at how the front row is handled before you look at the density behind it.
โ The front row is spaced out so it reads like baby hair
โ Ruled sharp, the edge shows before the gain does
You don't gain what you lower; you lose what you overshoot.
Can M-shaped recession be filled?
It can โ but with a different design from the front line.
The M-shape is naturally a lower-density zone, so carrying the centre's density straight out to the sides looks wrong. The inside of the recession is placed sparsely, and the tone is matched to the existing hair as it moves outward.
โ Different density inside and outside the recession
โ Dot tone matched to the colour and thickness of remaining hair
โ Density built gradually across sessions
A follicle dot is a fine point placed with varied size and depth of tone so it reads like a real follicle. In the recession these have to be scattered among the remaining hairs or an edge forms.Lined up in rows, that patch reads as a different texture.
Filling an M-shape is closer to joining than to filling.
What gets checked before we start?
The most important step is drawing a guideline and looking at it together.
Once the line is pencilled in, it's checked not only straight on but from the side and with the hair pushed back. Looking again standing up, after it was drawn sitting down, matters too โ posture and expression change how a line reads.
Photographing it helps as well.A line often reads differently in the mirror and in a photo, so deciding from both leaves less regret. If anything bothers you, say so there and then โ before pigment goes in, anything can be changed.
โ Checked from the front, the side and with hair up
โ Checked both seated and standing
โ Work stays inside the line you approved
A studio that proposes this step is setting the line by procedure, not by eye.
Sessions and healing?
Plainly put, two to three sessions, one to two weeks apart.
Taking density all the way in one pass reads heavy once healed.Splitting it lets the strength of the next session be set from how the last one settled. For two or three days the dots read sharper than they will, and around a week in the flaking clears and the colour lightens once.
โ A hat over the first three days makes it easier
โ Don't pick the flakes; let them come away on their own
โ Avoid sweat, saunas and swimming while it heals
The sharpness right after is a stage you pass through, not the result.
How long does it last?
Think in ranges โ and know that the forehead takes a lot of sun and fades faster than other areas.
Longevity is the stretch before the colour visibly lightens, and it varies widely. If you're outdoors a lot, a hat alone makes a difference. And if you dye your hair or grey comes in, the contrast against the dots shifts and can start to look off, which is the moment to have the tone matched again.
โ UV exposure is the biggest factor in how long it holds
โ If hair colour changes, revisit the dot tone
What sets longevity is the sun exposure afterwards, not the procedure.
Is anyone not suited to it?
Most people are, but there are times to postpone.
If there's active inflammation or a wound on the scalp, the dates move until it settles. And tell us in the consultation about medication you take and anything you apply to the scalp.
โ Postpone during scalp inflammation or injury
โ Tell us about medication and topical products first
โ And when your scalp has recently been at its best and worst
That last one turns out to be useful.Plenty of people's scalps rise and fall with the season or their condition, and knowing that cycle lets us place sessions in the good stretch.
CYAN is a PMU studio, not a medical facility, so we don't treat hair loss. If regrowth is what you want, that's a medical question for a medical provider.
The question isn't whether you can โ it's whether now is the time.
In short
โ The limit is set by where baby hair used to grow, not by forehead size
โ You don't gain what you lower; you lose what you overshoot
โ An M-shape is joined to the existing hair, not simply filled
โ The guideline is checked from the front, the side and standing before anything starts
โ Two to three sessions, one to two weeks apart, build the density
โ What sets longevity is the sun exposure afterwards
Lowering a hairline isn't a job where more is better. It's closer to finding where the line originally belonged.CYAN is in Hongdae, Mapo-gu, Seoul.Hairline design generally is in the hairline SMP guide and scalp density in the Seoul SMP guide. If you're having it done in Hongdae, see hairline tattoo in Hongdae. Thank you for reading this far. This was CYAN, lead artist at CYAN PMU.
CYAN is a semi-permanent makeup (PMU) studio, not a medical institution. Hairline tattooing is not a medical procedure that implants hair or treats hair loss; it is pigment work that creates the impression of density. Results and longevity vary with scalp condition and aftercare.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many centimetres can the hairline come down?
We don't settle it with a number; we draw the line in front of a mirror. Two people with the same forehead width can have different natural limits because the distance to the brows and where their own baby hair grew differ. Seeing the guideline drawn convinces most people far faster than hearing a measurement.
Will it look natural enough to go without a fringe?
That depends on how the front row was handled. A crisp edge means you'll want a fringe to feel comfortable; a scattered, baby-hair front row means wearing it back is much easier. Just ask in the consultation whether the front row will be finished soft.
Can just the M-shaped area be filled?
It can. But filling only the recession can leave a density mismatch with the centre that draws more attention, so designing it to connect with the surrounding area usually looks more natural. How far to work depends on how your hair is currently distributed, so sending a photo first shortens the consultation.
When can I wash my hair afterwards?
Usually from the next day, but not rubbing the area is what matters. Lather the shampoo in your hands first and lay it on, and press the towel to take up water rather than rubbing. Skip hot air from the dryer for the first few days.
Won't the colour look strange over time?
The forehead takes a lot of sun, so it fades faster than other areas โ which is why a hat makes a real difference if you're outdoors a lot. And if you dye your hair or grey comes in, the contrast between remaining hair and the dots changes, so having the tone matched again at that point keeps it looking natural.
Results and longevity vary by individual skin and aftercare. Pigment allergy, infection, and temporary swelling or redness are possible. Details are explained in the pre-procedure consultation.
