SMP in Hongdae โ€” How Many Sessions and How Many Days to Set Aside

Written byCYANWritten and reviewed by the director โ€” clinical psychologist (Korean national certification)

"I'm looking into scalp work but every place gives a different number of sessions."

"Can I do this while working full time? I don't know how many days it shows for."

"Is there anywhere that finishes it in one go? Coming back repeatedly feels like a lot."

Hi, I'm CYAN, lead artist at CYAN PMU in Hongdae, Seoul.

The scalp is not a procedure you clear a day for; it's one you clear a few weeks for. Book without knowing that and your schedule falls apart. Know it going in and the load actually gets lighter. Here's how the sessions, intervals and days off really work.

Why isn't SMP finished in one session?

Plainly put, taking the density all the way in one pass reads heavy once healed.

SMP is pigment work that builds fine dots in the shallow layers of the scalp to create the density of short hair coming through. It doesn't grow hair; it reduces the contrast that lets scalp show. So the result turns less on how dark you go than on how naturally you build.

A follicle dot is a fine point placed with varied size and depth of tone so it reads like a real follicle. Placed in a regular pattern, it looks artificial โ€” natural comes from calculated irregularity. That irregularity is hard to build in one pass, which is part of why the work is split.

โœ” Density is built with sessions, not with depth

โœ” The strength of the next pass is decided from how the last one healed

If somewhere offers to finish it in one, that's the warning sign.

How many sessions, usually?

The short version: two to three is typical.

It varies with your scalp and the density you want, so it has to be judged in person. But be wary of anywhere that won't put a number on it from the start โ€” if the sessions aren't fixed, the total cost isn't either.

โœ” Do they state the expected total as a number

โœ” Is it clear how many of those the listed price covers

โœ” Do they say upfront what an extra session costs if you want more density

A quote without a session count is a quote you can't compare.

How long between sessions?

Usually one to two weeks.

The scalp is skin, so the dots need time to settle.Stacking sessions without that gap adds irritation to skin that hasn't healed and the colour can go patchy. Leave it too long, on the other hand, and matching the tone to the previous pass gets harder.

The gap isn't waiting time; it's the time that produces the information for the next session.

A studio that insists on the one-to-two week gap is one that can match tone.

How many days does it show?

Honestly, the first three days are the most visible.

Right after, the dots read sharper than they will and the scalp can look red.It settles over about three days, and around a week in the thin flaking clears and the colour lightens once.People often read that lightening as failure โ€” it's the normal course.

โœ” A hat over the first three days makes it easier

โœ” Don't pick the flakes; let them come away on their own

โœ” Avoid sweat, saunas and swimming while it heals

You can usually wash your hair from the next day, but not rubbing the area matters.Lather the shampoo in your hands first and lay it on, and press the towel rather than rubbing.Skip hot air from the dryer for the first few days.

How dark it looks right after is a stage, not a result.

How do I fit this around work?

The short version: book Friday and let the weekend absorb it.

Since the first three days are the most visible, having them land on a weekend takes most of the weight off.Avoid a week with heavy sweating or outdoor plans.

โœ” Friday session, weekend recovery, is the lightest pattern

โœ” Keeping the same pattern each session makes it predictable

โœ” Leave the two weeks before an important date clear

Picture three weekends rather than one day, and you'll have it right.

How long do the results last?

Plainly put, think in ranges, and know that the crown takes a lot of sun.

Longevity is the stretch before the colour visibly lightens, and the scalp gets far more sun than the face, so it fades faster than other areas. If you're outdoors a lot, a hat alone makes a difference.

โœ” UV exposure is the single biggest factor in how long it holds

โœ” If your remaining hair changes colour โ€” dye, or greying โ€” have the tone matched again

What sets longevity is the sun exposure afterwards, not the procedure.

Can anyone have it done?

Most people can, but there are conditions to confirm in the consultation first.

If there's active inflammation or a wound on the scalp, the dates move until it settles. And tell us about medication you take and anything you're applying to the scalp โ€” topical products change how the scalp behaves on the day.

โœ” The names of any medication you take

โœ” When your scalp has been at its best and at its worst

โœ” Anything you've been applying to it recently

CYAN is a PMU studio, not a medical facility, so we don't treat hair loss. If regrowth is what you want, that's a medical question and belongs with a medical provider.

The question isn't whether you can โ€” it's whether now is the time.

What should I ask in the consultation?

For the scalp, whether they can show healed photos is the fastest test.

Day-of photos flatter everyone. It takes a one-month photo, and a case with a scalp like yours, before you can predict your own result.

โœ” "Do you have a one-month photo of a scalp like mine?"

โœ” Do they give total sessions and intervals as numbers

โœ” Do they open needles and cartridges in front of you

One question separates studios that have tracked their results from those that haven't.

In short

โœ” SMP is a few weeks in the calendar, not one day

โœ” Density is built with sessions, not with depth

โœ” The one-to-two week gap is what makes tone-matching possible

โœ” The first three days show most, and the lightening that follows is normal

โœ” A Friday session with the weekend after is the lightest pattern

โœ” What sets longevity is the sun exposure afterwards

Hearing "several sessions" can sound like a burden, but splitting the work is what protects the result.CYAN is in Hongdae, Mapo-gu, Seoul. The principles are in the Seoul SMP guide, hairline design in the hairline SMP guide, and if you're having it done in Hongdae, see SMP in Hongdae. Thank you for reading this far. This was CYAN, lead artist at CYAN PMU.

CYAN is a semi-permanent makeup (PMU) studio, not a medical institution. SMP is not a medical procedure that implants hair or treats hair loss; it is pigment work that creates the impression of density. Results and longevity vary with scalp condition and aftercare.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many SMP sessions will I need?

Plan on two to three, spaced one to two weeks apart. There's one more thing worth confirming before booking, though: whether the listed price is per session or for the whole course. On multi-session work that's where the real cost diverges, so ask when you get the quote.

I work full time โ€” when should I book?

A Friday session with the weekend after is the easiest pattern, because the three most visible days land on the weekend. Keeping the same weekday for each session makes the next one easy to plan, and it's worth avoiding weeks with heavy training or outdoor commitments.

How many days does it show for?

Three days is the peak, and it eases noticeably after that. Photos from this period help later โ€” take one on the day, one a week in and one a month in, under the same light. Side by side they show how the colour moved, and we use exactly those to set the strength of your next session.

Does SMP make hair grow back?

No. It reduces the contrast that lets scalp show through, so the area reads denser โ€” it doesn't grow hair. Knowing that in advance is what makes people happy with the result. If regrowth is the goal, that's a medical question and belongs with a medical provider.

What should I sort out before booking?

Come with your hair cut short. Longer remaining hair hides the scalp, which makes matching dot spacing and tone harder and makes the result difficult to check afterwards. How short depends on where you're starting, so send a photo when you book and we'll advise.

Results and longevity vary by individual skin and aftercare. Pigment allergy, infection, and temporary swelling or redness are possible. Details are explained in the pre-procedure consultation.
