PMU vs Tattoo: Eyebrow, Lip & Eyeliner Terms Explained (Seoul Guide)
"Is eyebrow tattoo the same thing as eyebrow semi-permanent makeup? I'm so confused."
"I searched 'lip tattoo' and lip blush kept coming up… are they the same?"
"And what is scalp SMP — do they actually tattoo your head?"
Hello, I'm CYAN (HSIN SIAN), founder of CYAN PMU ^^
After working as a nationally licensed clinical psychologist, I wanted to work more deeply with the human face and the impression it leaves — so since 2018 I've walked the path of a PMU artist. From my studio in Hongdae, Seoul (Mapo-gu), I've completed more than 40,000 treatments, and the question I'm asked most often is about terminology. When "tattoo," "semi-permanent," "blush," and "SMP" all blur together in search results, of course it's confusing. This isn't an ad — it's a clean guide to untangle the words. Give it three minutes and your search results will look completely different ^^
If you're flying in from abroad, CYAN is easy to reach: Myeongdong is about 25 minutes and Gangnam about 30 minutes to Hongdae by subway.
What's the real difference between semi-permanent makeup and a tattoo?
Semi-permanent makeup (PMU) and tattooing differ in depth and purpose — and almost every cosmetic treatment done on the face is PMU.
A tattoo deposits pigment deep into the dermis to set strong color in a single session and keep it for life. Semi-permanent makeup, on the other hand, places a thin layer of natural, skin-toned color much more shallowly, near the boundary of the epidermis and dermis. That's why it softens gradually over time, and why a retouch about a month later lets us reinforce the color and refine the design. Unlike the bold, varied palette of tattoos, PMU uses a limited range of natural shades to make everything look "like it was always there" — a cosmetic treatment, not body art.
✔ Tattoo: deep in the dermis · strong color · one session · hard to correct
✔ PMU: shallow · natural color · refined with a retouch · adjustable
✔ Both share possible bleeding, color shift, and allergy risks
You can see how our four core treatments are structured on the services page.
Are "eyebrow tattoo" and "eyebrow PMU" the same word?
"Eyebrow tattoo" is just a search term — in reality it means eyebrow PMU, such as powder brows.
In everyday use, eyebrow tattoo, eyebrow semi-permanent makeup, and powder brows all point to the same area. The proper name is powder brows (soft shading), and "eyebrow tattoo" is simply what people type into the search bar. By technique, microblading (natural hair-stroke brows) uses a fine blade-like tool to draw individual strokes that mimic real hairs, while shading (powder) builds up tiny dots into a soft, makeup-like gradient. The recommended technique depends on your skin type — for oily and combination skin, crisp strokes tend to blur, so shading-based styles often settle more reliably.
✔ Eyebrow tattoo = eyebrow PMU = powder brows (only the keyword differs)
✔ Microblading: hair-like strokes
✔ Shading (powder): built-up dots, makeup-like, stable on oily skin

Is "lip tattoo" different from lip blush?
"Lip tattoo" is the umbrella term for lip PMU, and lip blush is the go-to choice for a natural flush.
Think of these as variations within the same lip PMU family. Among the treatments people call lip tattoo or lip PMU, the most loved right now is lip blush. Lip blush deposits color thinly — deeper at the center, lighter at the edges — as if staining the lips, for a soft, tint-like natural color. Filling the entire lip with solid, lipstick-like color is called full lips instead. And if your natural lip color is dark or dull, it often isn't a one-session job: we first balance the darkness with a neutralizing pigment to create a brighter base, then build the color you want in a later session.
✔ Lip tattoo = lip PMU (lip blush, full lips, etc. — different finishes)
✔ Lip blush: center-to-edge natural gradient, tint-like
✔ Dark lips: neutralize first, then build color — may need several sessions
Pricing and longevity for each treatment are laid out clearly on the pricing page.
What about eyeliner tattoo and scalp SMP?
Eyeliner tattoo is lash-line PMU, and SMP is scalp PMU that draws follicles — naturalness is the key to both.
Eyeliner tattoo refers to lash-line semi-permanent makeup. The crucial point: pigment is placed only on the skin outside the lash line. The inner rim of the eyelid (the waterline / tightline) is directly tied to eye health, so the safe principle is to never treat it. SMP (scalp micropigmentation / scalp PMU) places tiny dots that resemble hair follicles onto the scalp, making hair look fuller or softly camouflaging scars. Because it builds density with dots rather than drawing hair strands, it looks natural once settled and tends to last longer than other treatments.
✔ Eyeliner tattoo = lash-line PMU (only on the skin outside the line)
✔ The waterline is a no-treatment zone — eye safety comes first
✔ Scalp SMP = follicle dots for density, also used to cover scars

Then why is it called "semi-permanent"?
Semi-permanent doesn't mean "makeup that washes away" — it's a treatment that lasts a long time while fading slowly.
This is the biggest misconception, so let's settle it. The name "semi-permanent" dates back to an era when pigment was placed poorly and faded quickly, and it stuck partly because clients liked the lower commitment compared to a permanent tattoo. But properly placed pigment may lighten over time without disappearing entirely — some residual color can remain. So the accurate phrase isn't "vanishes without a trace" but "fades gradually." Because color can stay for the long term, the design and shade are decisions to make carefully at your very first consultation.
✔ "Semi-permanent" = fully disappears ❌ / fades gradually ⭕
✔ Residual pigment may remain, so choose the design thoughtfully
✔ Discussing color and shape fully at the first consultation is essential

To wrap up, here are today's three key takeaways. First, almost every cosmetic treatment on the face is shallow-depth PMU, and eyebrow tattoo, lip tattoo, and eyeliner tattoo are all just other names for PMU. Second, each area has its own signature name — powder brows for brows, lip blush for lips, SMP for the scalp. Third, remember that "semi-permanent" doesn't wash away cleanly; it fades gradually.

※ The results and longevity of semi-permanent makeup (PMU) vary by individual skin type, lifestyle, and aftercare, and possible side effects include pigment allergy, infection, and temporary swelling or redness. CYAN is a semi-permanent makeup studio, not a medical institution, and does not provide diagnosis or medical treatment. Specific suitability and precautions are explained during your pre-treatment consultation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are eyebrow tattoo and eyebrow semi-permanent makeup really the same?
In everyday language they point to the same treatment. The proper name is eyebrow PMU, such as powder brows (soft shading), but people commonly search for it as 'eyebrow tattoo.' The difference from a real tattoo matters: a traditional tattoo deposits strong color deep in the dermis to last permanently in one session, while eyebrow PMU places natural color much more shallowly so it softens gradually over time. So even when the word 'tattoo' is attached, almost all cosmetic work done on the face in Seoul is actually PMU.
How is lip tattoo different from lip blush?
Both belong to the same lip PMU family, so they overlap. 'Lip tattoo' is an umbrella search term for lip PMU, and lip blush is the technique within it that deposits color deeper at the center and lighter at the edges, staining the lips into a soft, tint-like natural flush. Filling the whole lip with solid, lipstick-like color is called full lips instead. If your natural lip color is dark, a neutralizing pigment may be needed first to balance the darkness before building color, so the exact plan is decided at consultation based on your lip condition.
Is scalp SMP an actual tattoo on the head?
It doesn't draw hair strands. SMP (scalp micropigmentation, also called scalp PMU) deposits tiny dots that look like hair follicles onto the scalp, creating the impression of greater hair density or softly camouflaging scars. Because it builds density with dots, it looks natural once settled and tends to last longer than other PMU treatments. Results and longevity vary by individual, so the approach is tailored to your scalp condition during consultation.
Does semi-permanent makeup disappear completely over time?
It's more accurate to say it fades gradually rather than vanishes. The name 'semi-permanent' came from an era when pigment was placed poorly and faded quickly, but properly placed pigment may lighten over the years while some residual color can remain. That's why design and shade should be chosen carefully at the first consultation. As a rough guide, longevity is about 1 to 3 years for eyebrows, 1 to 2 years for lips, 1 to 2 years for eyeliner, and 3 to 5 years for SMP, with individual variation.
Results and longevity vary by individual skin and aftercare. Pigment allergy, infection, and temporary swelling or redness are possible. Details are explained in the pre-procedure consultation.
