Flying to Korea for Semi-Permanent Makeup — The Complete Inbound Guide (Must Read)

Written byCYAN

"I really want to fly to Korea for semi-permanent makeup, but I have no idea how many days to plan for."

"My Korean isn't great — I'm worried the consultation won't go smoothly."

"Everyone says Hongdae, but is it actually easy to reach from the airport or my hotel?"

These are the exact worries international clients send me before they fly to Korea for semi-permanent makeup.

Hello — I'm CYAN (HSIN SIAN), founder of CYAN PMU in Hongdae, Seoul.

I'm a PMU artist with a background as a nationally licensed clinical psychologist, I serve as an ISO semi-permanent makeup examiner, and I was the first Korean artist to teach powder brows (eyebrow PMU) to a clinic in Japan. Since opening my Hongdae studio in 2018, I've worked with clients from more than 15 countries and completed over 40,000 procedures.

Today I'll walk you through exactly how to plan your trip — how many days to set aside and what to prepare in advance — all from an international traveler's point of view. Five minutes here, and your Korea PMU trip will feel a lot clearer.

How many days should I plan for a PMU trip to Korea?

Plan for the recovery window, not just the procedure day. The work itself finishes in a single day, but your itinerary should account for healing.

Semi-permanent makeup places pigment into the skin through tiny micro-abrasions, so for about 5 to 14 days after your appointment the area goes through a natural healing stage — light scabbing forms and then flakes away. During this time the color looks darker and bolder than the final result, and it takes about a month after the scabs fall off for the true color and shape to settle. You can fly home the very next day with no harm to the result, but most clients feel more relaxed leaving a little breathing room for the early swelling and the bolder initial color.

✔ Allow 1 to 2 extra days for the procedure day plus the start of recovery

✔ Know in advance that darker color and scabbing in the first 5 to 14 days is normal

✔ For a big event (wedding, photoshoot), book at least 2 to 3 weeks ahead

Korea PMU is a "one-day procedure," but the real finish comes at the one-month mark when the color stabilizes.

You can review the recovery flow for each treatment by area on the services page.

Can I get the touch-up done on the same trip?

Usually no — the touch-up has to wait until your skin has fully healed for the color to take evenly. I completely understand wanting to finish everything in one visit, but rushing it works against you.

Skin renews on roughly a 28-day cycle (the keratinization cycle), so a touch-up done too early works on skin that hasn't recovered yet — that means more discomfort and patchy color. For that reason, brows are best touched up about 4 to 6 weeks after the first session, and lips about 3 to 4 weeks after. In most cases that's longer than a single trip allows. The good news: CYAN's pricing already includes one touch-up, so getting it on your next visit to Korea won't catch you off guard with extra costs.

✔ Brow touch-ups are ideal at about 4 to 6 weeks, lips at about 3 to 4 weeks

✔ CYAN's price includes one touch-up session

✔ Map out your return visit together during the consultation

Rushing the touch-up costs you. Let the skin heal first, and the color finishes clean.

You can see touch-up-inclusive pricing by area on the pricing page.

Will the consultation work even if I don't speak Korean?

Yes — CYAN runs consultations in five languages: Korean, English, Japanese, and Chinese (Simplified and Traditional). We make sure language never leaves you communicating only half of the shape or color you actually want.

We take real time with the consultation before any work begins. Together we go over the result you're after, your skin condition and medical history, any medications you're taking, and any past PMU or cosmetic procedures. To gauge pigment allergy in advance, we generally recommend a patch test about 48 hours before your appointment (a small amount of pigment applied to the skin to watch the reaction) — and because a negative result doesn't guarantee 100% safety, I'll always be honest with you about that. With my background as a clinical psychologist, I value a consultation built on listening and deciding together far more than rushing you into a quick yes.

✔ Consultations available in Korean, English, Japanese, and Chinese (Simplified/Traditional)

✔ The patch test is ideally 48 hours before the procedure — build it into your schedule

✔ Jot down your medications, allergies, and past procedures before you come

The lower the language and consultation barriers, the higher your satisfaction with the result.

I hear the color changes after the procedure — is that okay?

Yes — semi-permanent makeup color shifting over time is completely normal. Understand the mechanism and the vague anxiety disappears.

Right after the procedure the pigment sits close to the surface of the skin, so it looks dark and bold; once the scabs flake off and the epidermis renews, it lifts a tone brighter and softer. And "semi-permanent" doesn't mean the color vanishes cleanly on its own — it means it fades gradually. Sun exposure, smoking, oily skin, and frequent exfoliating products all speed up fading, so wearing sunscreen from one week after the procedure helps with retention. At CYAN, typical retention is roughly 1 to 3 years for brows, 1 to 2 years for lip blush, 1 to 2 years for eyeliner tattoo, and 3 to 5 years for SMP (scalp micropigmentation) — with individual variation.

✔ Bold right after, then lifting a tone brighter — that's the normal process

✔ Semi-permanent fades; it doesn't disappear completely

✔ UV, smoking, and oily skin make color fade faster

The color isn't going wrong — it's settling into place in the order it's supposed to.

Is the Hongdae studio easy to reach from the airport or other areas?

CYAN is located in Hongdae (Mapo-gu), Seoul — an easy spot to reach for international clients arriving via Incheon or Gimpo airport.

Hongik University Station sits where Line 2 and the Airport Railroad (Incheon Airport ↔ Seoul) both run, so you connect straight from the airport by subway. Staying in Gangnam or Myeongdong works too: Myeongdong to Hongdae is about 25 minutes by subway, and Gangnam to Hongdae is about 30 minutes by subway. Since your condition on the day matters, sleep well the night before and skip heavy drinking and caffeine — your skin will recover better for it.

Wrapping up

Here are the five things to remember when you fly to Korea for semi-permanent makeup.

One: the procedure is a single day, but the real finish is the one-month mark when color stabilizes

Two: touch-ups come after the skin heals (brows 4–6 weeks, lips 3–4 weeks) for a clean result

Three: build the 5-language consult and the 48-hour patch test into your schedule

Four: post-procedure color change is normal — UV and smoking fade it faster

Five: Hongdae is an easy subway ride from the airport and Seoul's main districts

You've committed to a long journey — I truly hope your time in Korea leaves you with a result you love.

Thank you for reading all the way through.

Warmly, CYAN (HSIN SIAN), founder of CYAN PMU, Hongdae, Seoul.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days should I plan for a semi-permanent makeup trip to Korea?

The procedure itself finishes in a single day, but plan around the recovery process. Semi-permanent makeup goes through light scabbing that forms and flakes off over about 5 to 14 days, and the color and shape settle around the one-month mark. You can fly home the next day with no harm to the result, but the first few days bring bolder color and possible mild swelling, so leaving 1 to 2 extra days for the procedure day and early recovery feels more comfortable. For a wedding, photoshoot, or other major event, book at least 2 to 3 weeks ahead. Recovery speed varies by individual.

Can I get my touch-up done on the same trip to Korea?

In most cases it's hard to fit the touch-up into the same trip. A touch-up should be done after the skin has fully healed so the color takes evenly, and given the skin's keratinization cycle (about 28 days), brows are best at about 4 to 6 weeks after the first session and lips at about 3 to 4 weeks. Going too early means more discomfort and patchy color. CYAN's pricing already includes one touch-up, so getting it on your next visit to Korea won't bring extra cost. Plan your return visit together during the consultation.

Can I get a consultation and procedure if I don't speak Korean?

Yes. CYAN runs consultations in five languages: Korean, English, Japanese, and Chinese (Simplified and Traditional). In the consultation we go over the shape and color you want, your skin condition and medical history, any medications you take, and any past PMU or cosmetic procedures. To gauge pigment allergy in advance we generally recommend a patch test about 48 hours before the procedure — and because a negative result doesn't guarantee 100% safety, we're upfront about that too. Jotting down your medications, allergies, and past procedures beforehand makes the consultation go more smoothly.

Is the CYAN studio easy to reach from the airport or Gangnam?

CYAN is located in Hongdae (Mapo-gu), Seoul. Hongik University Station is on Line 2 and the Airport Railroad, so you connect straight from Incheon or Gimpo airport by subway, and staying in Gangnam or Myeongdong works fine too — Myeongdong to Hongdae is about 25 minutes by subway and Gangnam to Hongdae is about 30 minutes by subway. Since your condition on the day matters, sleep well the night before and avoid heavy drinking and caffeine, which also helps recovery.

Results and longevity vary by individual skin and aftercare. Pigment allergy, infection, and temporary swelling or redness are possible. Details are explained in the pre-procedure consultation.
